The buccal mucosa, including the vestibule and nonkeratinized alveolar mucosa, is usually smooth and moist. Innocuous entities in this region include linea alba (a thin white line, typically bilateral, on the level of the occlusal plane, where the cheek is bitten), Fordyce granules (aberrant sebaceous glands appearing as &lt 1 mm light yellow spots that also may occur on the lips), and white sponge nevus (bilateral thick white folds over most of the buccal mucosa). Occasionally, pigmentation of the mucosa may arise from foreign material that is incorporated into the tissue. Most commonly, this occurs as a blue or black area adjacent to a dental amalgam filling. This is known as an amalgam tattoo. The orifices of the parotid (Stensen) ducts are opposite the maxillary 1st molar on the inside of each cheek and should not be mistaken for an abnormality. Recognizing these avoids needless biopsy and apprehension.


Dental anatomy is a field of anatomy dedicated to the study of human tooth structures. The development, appearance, and classification of teeth fall within its purview. (The function of teeth as they contact one another falls elsewhere, under dental occlusion.) Tooth formation begins before birth, and the teeth's eventual morphology is dictated during this time. Dental anatomy is also a taxonomical science: it is concerned with the naming of teeth and the structures of which they are made, this information serving a practical purpose in dental treatment.


A significant amount of research has focused on determining the processes that initiate tooth development. It is widely accepted that there is a factor within the tissues of the first branchial arch that is necessary for the development of teeth.[2] The tooth bud (sometimes called the tooth germ) is an aggregation of cells that eventually forms a tooth and is organized into three parts: the enamel organ, the dental papilla and the dental follicle.[3]


The enamel organ is composed of the outer enamel epithelium, inner enamel epithelium, stellate reticulum and stratum intermedium.[3] These cells give rise to ameloblasts, which produce enamel and the reduced enamel epithelium. The growth of cervical loop cells into the deeper tissues forms Hertwig's Epithelial Root Sheath, which determines the root shape of the tooth. The dental papilla contains cells that develop into odontoblasts, which are dentin-forming cells.[3] Additionally, the junction between the dental papilla and inner enamel epithelium determines the crown shape of a tooth.[2] The dental follicle gives rise to three important entities: cementoblasts, osteoblasts, and fibroblasts. Cementoblasts form the cementum of a tooth. Osteoblasts give rise to the alveolar bone around the roots of teeth. Fibroblasts develop the periodontal ligaments which connect teeth to the alveolar bone through cementum.[4]


There are several different dental notation systems for associating information to a specific tooth. The three most commons systems are the FDI World Dental Federation notation, Universal numbering system (dental), and Palmer notation method. The FDI system is used worldwide, and the universal is used widely in the United States.


Embrasures are triangularly shaped spaces located between the proximal surfaces of adjacent teeth. The borders of embrasures are formed by the interdental papilla of the gingiva, the adjacent teeth, and the contact point where the two teeth meet. There are four embrasures for every contact area: facial (also called labial or buccal), lingual (or palatal), occlusal or incisal, and cervical or interproximal space. The cervical embrasure usually is filled by the interdental papilla from the gingiva; in the absence of adequate gingival tissue a black angle, or Angularis Nigra is visible.


The development of cognitive knowledge, motor skills, and artistic sense in order to restore lost tooth structure is fundamental for dental professionals. The course of dental anatomy is taught in the initial years of dental school, and is a component of the basic core sciences program in the faculties of dentistry. The learning objectives of the dental anatomy course include identifying anatomical and morphological characteristics of human primary and permanent teeth; identifying and reproducing tooth surface details in order to recognize and diagnose anatomical changes; and developing student’s psychomotor skills for restoring teeth with proper form and function. The majority of dental schools rely on traditional methods to teach dental anatomy, using lectures to convey the theoretical component; whereas the practical component uses two-dimensional drawing of teeth, identification of anatomical features in samples of preserved teeth, and carving of teeth. The aim of the present literature review is to summarize different educational strategies proposed or implemented to challenge the traditional approaches of teaching dental anatomy, specifically the flipped classroom educational model. The goal is to promote this approach as a promising strategy to teaching dental anatomy, in order to foster active learning, critical thinking, and engagement among dental students.

In order to identify problems in the oral cavity, the dental professional must first recognize normal anatomy as well as the normal appearance of the surrounding areas. In addition, it is essential the dental professional be able to evaluate the health of the teeth as well as the supporting tissues and periodontium. Even though the dentist is responsible for diagnosis, all dental professionals should be able to recognize deviations from normal in order to determine the need for further investigation by the dentist.

Although these traditional techniques have been used to teach dental anatomy for decades in dental schools in the U.S. and many countries around the world, several concerns have been raised about their efficacy. One of the main limitations of the dental anatomy course is that it is usually isolated from other courses related to patient care, and present poor emphasis to clinical relevance [1]. Likewise, the course usually fails to prepare students to transition from pre-patient care to real clinical scenarios [5]. Moreover, the traditional lecture model presents several limitations, including one-way communication, lack of interaction, and poor student engagement [7]. Studying the theory of dental anatomy alone is not enough to acquaint students with the anatomy of each tooth in detail. Similarly, using the gold-standard oversized wax/soap blocks carving has been also criticized. Dental students should develop an ability to analyze volume, form, and function of each tooth and restore both the aesthetics and the complete physiology. However, using models with oversized dimensions impair the perception of proper proportion [2]. As a result, neither psychomotor nor cognitive skills are learned in the context of clinical practice.


The findings of this study question the validity of inherited ideas in dental anatomy regarding average dimensions on the morphological variability. Most common example is related to dimension differences first and second premolars.

The increasingly detailed and varied literature on the flipped classroom approach clearly emphasises that there is no generic or magic recipe for flipped classrooms. Successful flipping requires active engagement by experienced teaching staff to design curricula and learning environments using a student focused lens. However, some characteristic features are identifiable for a successful flipped classroom and designing a learning environment that allows flexibility and selectivity and promotes active learning [11]. Development of online resources and learning processes have been suggested to augment the flipped classroom experience including PowerPoint slides, lecture capture recordings, animated-solved assignments, web-based simulation games, case studies, real world applications, and learning management systems as well as before and after class online quizzes [12].
